Basketball IQ · Lesson 01

Don't kill your dribble!

Keep your options. Read the floor. Make your move.

Picture this: You are bringing the ball up the court. A defender steps toward you. You feel the pressure and pick up your dribble before you see a pass. Now what?

A stopped dribble changes everything

While you are dribbling, you can change direction, attack space, or move to a safer passing angle. When you end your dribble, you cannot simply start dribbling again. Your defender knows that and can crowd you. Another defender may come to trap.

Stopping is sometimes the right play. Stopping without a plan gives the defense an advantage.

The Wolfpack idea

Know your next move

Before you stop, look up. Is a teammate open? Do you have a balanced, open shot? Can you finish at the rim? Would a controlled stop protect the ball and give you a safe pass? Make the decision on purpose.

  1. Head up.
  2. Read the floor.
  3. Keep your options.
  4. Make your move.

When pressure comes

Keep your head up and your dribble controlled. Protect the ball with your body without pushing the defender. Change direction into open space when it is safe. Do not dribble yourself into a sideline or corner trap.

Your teammates have a job, too. They should move, create a passing angle, and help you find a safe way forward. Standing and watching leaves the ball handler alone.

Do not dribble forever. If a safe pass appears, make it. If you have a good shot or a path to finish, take the right play. If continuing to dribble puts the ball at risk, a controlled stop may be best.
