Development

The Wolfpack Player

Four things we build in every player, at every age: Skill. IQ. Effort. Teammate.

Skill

Do it right. Then do it fast.

The tools to play the game, at the speed the game is played.

  • Handle with purpose: every dribble goes somewhere.
  • Pass on time and on target.
  • Finish through contact, with control.
  • Shoot the shots you’ll actually get, at game speed.
  • Footwork: jump stops, pivots, two feet in the paint.
  • Screen: feet set, make a wall, then roll or pop.
  • Guard the ball: stance, active hands, moving feet.

Built through reps and competition.

IQ

Be a student of the game.

Learn not just what to do, but why — and see the play before it happens.

  • Understand why, not just what.
  • Read the floor: spacing, gaps and where help is coming from.
  • Recognize advantage, and attack it.
  • Understand defense: see the ball, help, recover.
  • Decide in a second: shoot, drive or pass.
  • Take good shots. Pass up forced ones.
  • Accept coaching, and learn from every practice and game.

Talent gets noticed. IQ earns trust.

Effort

Fight for every possession.

Grit and persistence: the part of the game every player controls.

  • Run back. First three steps explosive.
  • Rebound, and go after the ball outside your area.
  • Pursue loose balls. Get on the floor.
  • Fight for possessions on both ends.
  • Keep playing through mistakes: one bad possession never becomes three.
  • Finish the possession, then make the next play.

Effort is non-negotiable. Energy is your responsibility.

Teammate

Play for each other.

Playing together, and making the players around you better.

  • Communicate: ball, help, screen, cutter, shot.
  • Screen for teammates.
  • Move the ball, and move without it.
  • Make the extra pass.
  • Help on defense. Rebound together.
  • Pick teammates up: no pointing, no blaming.
  • Put team basketball ahead of individual stats.

We compete with opponents. We build each other.

Good players play hard. Smart players play hard and think. Wolfpack players do both.

The four stay the same. The bar rises.

Skill, IQ, Effort and Teammate don’t change as players get older — the standard for each one does. That’s how a Wolfpack team keeps growing together, season after season.
