You pass the ball. What happens next? Don't automatically follow it and bring your defender along. Make the defense chase you instead.
The Wolfpack idea
Pass and go away
Pass, cut through open space, and fill a spot that is free. Keep the lane clear for a drive. Make every defender move.
- Pass.
- Cut.
- Move.
- Fill the open spot.
Five players. Five spots.
Picture five perimeter spots: top, left wing, right wing, left corner, right corner. These are spacing landmarks, not places to stand still. When you move, fill an open spot instead of crowding a teammate.
After a pass, cut hard toward the basket when the lane is open. If no pass comes, continue through and relocate. Do not stop in the lane. Give the ball handler room to drive and a clear passing angle.
Read the play
“Go away” is a teaching cue, not a rule for every possession. A deliberate dribble handoff, useful ball screen, pressure release, or called play may bring you toward the ball. Know why you are moving. Do not bring another defender to a teammate by accident.
